The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations is a national museum located in Marseille, France. It was inaugurated on 7 June 2013 as part of Marseille-Provence 2013, a year when Marseille was designated as the European Capital of Culture. In 2015, it won the Council of Europe Museum Prize.Access preferences
- Audition (Acoustic Experiences)
Hearing impaired visitors with a hearing aid can receive amplification:
– in the auditorium, where most of the cultural and artistic events take place;
– on guided tours by borrowing a personal magnetic induction loop from the information desks at the J4 and Fort Saint-Jean and for the multimedia guide, borrowing a personal magnetic induction loop from the information desks.
The films presented in the exhibition spaces are subtitled in French.- FSL Tours (Sign language)
The multimedia guide offers a tour of the Mediterranean Gallery exhibition in French Sign Language.

Available from the J4 ticket office.- General accessibility (Accessible entrance for pushchairs and wheelchairs)
The recommended access point is the J4 entrance. The museum’s information points, all of its exhibition spaces and the auditorium are wheelchair accessible. However, some entrances to Fort Saint-Jean and a few parts of the Garden of Migration have little to no accessibility. To facilitate visits to the Mucem, a site plan is available at the information desks.
- Mobility (Getting around inside the museum)
The entire cultural programme is wheelchair accessible: passageways, lifts, dedicated spaces in the auditorium, etc. To enhance your enjoyment of your visit, we recommend that you inform the Reservations Department of your disability.
- Sensory tours (Multisensory Experiences)
A guided sensory tour is dedicated to the tactile exhibition. The mediators combine audio descriptions with a sensory approach (touch, smell and hearing). Price: €5 for the visually impaired person and free for an individual assisting him/her (the presence of a helper is strongly recommended)

- Tactile, sensory tour (Multisensory Experiences)
The tactile and sensory route through the Mediterranean Gallery is suitable for visitors with mental impairments. The objects selected for this tour convey the fundamental points of the exhibition’s main themes. In addition, its tactile, sensory dimension allows all visitors to comprehend the objects, through both their intellects and their senses.
The presence of a helper is strongly recommended.
- Touch exhibition (Tactile Experiences)
The sensory course through the Mediterranean Gallery presents tactile interpretations of a dozen or so seminal pieces evocative of the exhibition’s main themes. Dedicated to the visually impaired and the blind, it is an integral part the exhibition and is accessible to all museum guests. Each tactile object is accompanied by a text in large print and in Braille.
- Visual aid (Visual Experiences)
The visually impaired may borrow magnifying glasses from the cloakrooms, free of charge. Guide dogs and canes with tips are permitted inside the museum.
