Den gamle by / The Old Town
Den Gamle By is an open-air town museum located in the Aarhus Botanical Gardens, in central Aarhus, Denmark.Access preferences
- Disabled parking (Parking)
Parking is free if a disabled sign is displayed in the windscreen. This applies to all parking spaces operated by the City of Aarhus, including spaces which are not reserved for disabled parking.
- Eateries (Food and allergies)
There are several different eateries in the old town.
All the eateries represent Danish food traditions with a focus on quality and an artisan approach. Den Gamle By’s bakers make freshly baked bread and cakes every day, following the same recipes and with the same professional pride as the old master bakers. Den Gamle By’s chefs salt, smoke and pickle, depending on the season. Herbs, fruit and old vegetable varieties are harvested in Den Gamle By’s own gardens.

The are several public busses going to The Old Town.
- Restrooms around the museum (Accessible restrooms)
There are disabled toilets in the building behind the Mintmaster’s Mansion on the Town Square and in the exhibition building that houses the Danish Poster Museum and the Gallery of Decorative Arts.
In addition, there are toilets and baby-changing facilities at several locations in Den Gamle By.
If you suddenly need nappies, sanitary towels, pain relief, plasters or poop bags, they are available free of charge from the Information desk.- Service animals (Animals)
Dogs are welcome in the streets, but not in the buildings and exhibitions. Service dogs and guide dogs are exempt from this rule.
- Wheelchair, pushchairs and other wheeled aides (Accessible entrance for pushchairs and wheelchairs)
The cobbled streets in the 1864 neighbourhood can be a challenge for people who have difficulty walking, wheelchair users and for visitors with pushchairs/prams.

Borrow a mobility scooter
Mobility scooters can be borrowed from the Information desk. In the peak season, the scooters are in high demand, so it is a good idea to book one in advance by phone. The scooter is easy to operate and free to borrow.
