Founded in 1975 as a part of the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, the Tropenmuseum Junior remains the oldest museum dedicated to children, not only in the county, but also in Europe.
Tropenmuseum Junior develops interactive exhibitions and programmes for various target groups, focusing on children aged 6 to 13. Every two and a half years the museum creates a new exhibition, offering immersive experiences, aimed at making children curious and open to different cultures.
At Tropenmuseum Junior, the principle of "learning by doing" is brought to life through extraordinary exhibitions and immersive experiences designed to ignite children's curiosity and appreciation for diverse cultures. The museum skillfully connects people, cultures, and time periods—past, present, and future—by sharing stories from multiple perspectives and utilizing a vast global collection.
"It is not only about looking at or listening to. It is about being part of.”
This ethos is embodied in Tropenmuseum Junior's exhibitions, which seamlessly blend research, museum methodology, and cutting-edge design to create interactive experiences. The museum champions the idea that true understanding comes from active involvement. To this end, it has developed seven key criteria for its exhibitions and programs, all aimed at fostering open-mindedness and delivering a profound and meaningful museum experience.
